We are seeking a Lab and Materials Test Technician for the Research and Development Team at our Corporate Office in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

Position Summary:
Technical support position requiring general supervision with limited degree of autonomy except on standardized and pre-determined tasks. Must be able to read, interpret and follow ASTM & ISO standards. Performs various tasks within a department and works as a team player. Typically reports to the Engineering Manager or Department Manager.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Evaluates raw, and molded materials used in both Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) and thermoplastic molded products.

  • Measures physical properties of Thermosets (SMC) and Thermoplastics (N-6, PP) on molded plaques according to ASTM and ISO standards.

  • Assist and perform water-jet cutting of samples for testing.

  • Assist and perform compression molding trials for new SMC materials qualification.

  • Perform part testing via burn-offs to determine Glass and Carbon fiber content and orientation.

  • Assists in process and material development in the manufacturing facilities.

  • Maintains inventory and orders raw materials for department use.

  • Analyzes defects in customer’s products using microscopic analysis.

  • Collects data from laboratory and plant trials.

  • Prepares and distributes applicable technical reports.

  • Documents necessary data relating to new raw materials of product approvals, in-plant trials and laboratory SMC formulations.

  • As directed, performs research, testing, data gathering, measurements, or engineering analysis in an office, laboratory or manufacturing environment.

  • Performs documented repetitive testing or tasks under limited supervision. 


  • High School Diploma or GED required.  Associate’s or B.S. degree in scientific field preferred.  

  • Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office applications including Excel, Access, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Must be a self-starter and an independent problem solver.

  • Physical Requirements:

  • Works in an office, laboratory or plant environment.  May occasionally lift or carry items (up to 40 pounds).

  • Job requires sitting, standing, and walking, mostly at the incumbent’s discretion.

  • Normal visual acuity required for computer work.

  • Position requires frequent exposure to noise, temperature extremes, moving parts, fumes, etc. in a laboratory or plant environment.
